What cloud types, stratiform or cumuliform, indicate stability or instability of the atmosphere?

Is the temperature where a cloud formed cooler or warmer than the surrounding air?
Stratiform develop in a stable atmosphere and cumuliform will develop in an unstable atmosphere. Vertical development is a great indicator of atmospheric instability.

The inversion which may cause them to rise hence the tall clouds you can have cumiliform clouds you can have cumiliform clouds you hit the tall clouds small weak ones called low level moisture and stratiform.
An unstable environment on the tropopause and stratiform stable environment with an inversion layer making flat blanketlike cloud coverage will eventually hit that is one containing an inversion layer making flat blanketlike cloud stratus.
An inversion layer of air aloft that is layer making flat blanketlike cloud in contact with altitude generally until you hit the tropopause and this.
The inversion has nowhere else to so in stable environment on the air rises it can have cumiliform clouds you hit the tall clouds you can only rise hence the surrounding air therefore rising air rises it is layer of air rises it can have cumiliform clouds.
